Meet Ms. Kay, the friendly and familiar face of the Venture Development Center (VDC) at Horn Entrepreneurship. With a background in travel and tourism from Thames Valley University in London and a passion for connecting with people, she brings a wealth of experience and warmth to her role as an Administrative Assistant and Advisor for a Minor in Entrepreneurship and Integrated Design. From overseeing VDC operations to greeting students and guests with her signature smile, Ms. Kay plays an integral role in fostering the innovative and inclusive environment that defines Horn. In this Q&A, she shares insights into her journey, passions, and what makes the VDC such a special place.
What is your professional and academic background?
I graduated from Thames Valley University in West London, England, with a degree in Travel and Tourism. My love for travel and meeting new people drew me to this field. In 1999, I immigrated to the U.S. to explore greater opportunities, which led to owning a business in Newark, DE, with my husband.
In 2018, I joined the University of Delaware (UD), and since August 2021, I’ve been part of Horn Entrepreneurship as an Administrative Assistant. My role includes overseeing the operations of the Venture Development Center (VDC) and being the welcoming face—fondly known as "Ms. Kay"—who greets students and guests.
What made you get into this line of work, and what inspires you to keep working hard?
I genuinely enjoy meeting people from diverse backgrounds and building connections. Seeing students succeed, grow, and tap into the opportunities at Horn inspires me daily. Whether they are launching startups, searching for ideas, or seeking a like-minded community, I find fulfillment in being part of their entrepreneurial journey.
The VDC is a hub of creativity, and engaging with students there adds another layer of excitement to my work. It’s inspiring to witness their passion and creativity firsthand, and being a part of their growth is incredibly rewarding.
What is your favorite part about working at Horn?
It’s hard to pick just one favorite thing, but I’d say it’s the people. The passionate staff, dedicated faculty, and Horn’s mission all align to create an innovative and supportive environment.
Working at the VDC is particularly special. I love the constant engagement with students and the opportunity to witness their entrepreneurial journeys unfold.
How would you describe Horn in three words?
Passionate. Creative. Innovative.
While Ms. Kay’s professional life at the Venture Development Center revolves around supporting students and fostering entrepreneurial success, there’s much more to who she is.
How many countries have you traveled to?
I’ve traveled to 15 countries, including most of Europe, some parts of Asia, and a couple in the Middle East.
If I had to pick a favorite, it would be Greece—it’s the ultimate destination for me. However, if I were to choose a place to live permanently, it would be Thailand. I’ve also had my fair share of travel adventures, accidentally going to the wrong airport in London, and also having my food stolen from my room in Kilimanjaro by a monkey!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love taking on DIY projects, like whitewashing a fireplace and decorating my home, and I’m always on the lookout for new creative ideas that I can take on at home.
I also enjoy working out, but I like to keep it interesting by mixing things up—going from the treadmill to Pilates to weights in one session.
Another passion of mine is cooking. While Indian food comes naturally to me, my favorite cuisine to cook is Italian. Over winter break, my son and I made gnocchi together. Rolling the dough was so relaxing!
Is there anything else you want readers to know?
The VDC is open to everyone! If you are looking for that “home away from home feeling” on campus then you should check out the VDC. Many people assume it’s exclusively for entrepreneurship students, but anyone can use the VDC, access its resources, or sign up for its programs. Everyone who steps through our doors is welcome.
