Have you ever tried drizzling tahini on Greek yogurt with honey and sliced bananas? University of Delaware alumna and cofounder of Soom Foods Amy Zitelman recommends it and, she should know - Amy and her sisters launched Soom Foods, a company specializing in tahini, in 2013.
Tahini is an ingredient made from roasted sesame seeds. It’s a versatile ingredient enhancing both Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines. Tahini’s rich flavor profile elevates a wide range of savory and sweet dishes, such as hummus, baba ganoush, and tahini cookies. Its creamy texture and taste make it a beloved staple in many kitchens around the world, adding depth and complexity to various culinary creations.
The idea for their tahini business dates back to the summer of 2011, just after Amy’s graduation from the University of Delaware. It began with a conversation between Amy and her sisters, Shelby and Jackie, where they discussed the potential of introducing high-quality tahini to the American market. They recognized a gap in the market and felt passionate about bringing authentic, delicious tahini to consumers. Drawing inspiration from their Israeli heritage and family recipes, they embarked on their entrepreneurial journey. This led to the creation of Soom Foods, a company dedicated to producing premium tahini products sourced from the finest Ethiopian sesame seeds. Ultimately, being named to Forbes' 30 under 30 in the food and beverage category in 2018. Through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to quality, Soom Foods has grown into a successful business, delighting customers with their superior tahini offerings.
Amy spoke at "Founding Philly Podcast”, about her experience launching and growing Soom. Here are a few pieces of her advice:
