Each spring, Horn Entrepreneurship recognizes entrepreneurial students through awards and scholarships totaling almost $10,000 in cash and Venture Development Center credit. Undergraduate students from all majors are invited to apply now through Friday, March 29 at 11:59 p.m.
Students may use one application to apply to all of the awards, but please note that a separate essay is required for each. Students may not apply for an award they have previously won. Award recipients will be honored on Tuesday, April 30 at Hen Hatch Finals & Innovation Showcase and on Thursday, May 16 at the Graduation Celebration & Awards Party.
The deadline is the day before spring break –applications can be submitted any time until Friday, March 29 at 11:59 p.m. Keep reading for a more detailed description of each award, or submit your application.
Shawn & Sheryl McCall Award for Entrepreneurship - $2500
Two McCall Awards for Entrepreneurship are granted to undergraduate students from any UD college, in any major, who show entrepreneurial promise. Each award includes $1500 cash and $1000 in *VDC Credit. Students who are primary owners in an incorporated business, may elect to receive the entire award payable to their business. Graduating seniors are eligible for the award; however, VDC credits must be used by May 31, 2019.
To be considered, submit an application with the “Shawn & Sheryl McCall Award” checkbox selected and a brief essay describing your entrepreneurial aspirations. The applications will be reviewed by faculty member(s) of Horn Entrepreneurship who will then select the recipient(s).
Brad & Jennifer Bono Award - $1500
The Brad and Jennifer Bono Award is granted to an undergraduate student from any UD college, in any major, who demonstrates entrepreneurial leadership and social impact. Recipients may elect to receive the $1500 award in the form of *VDC credit or cash. Graduating seniors are eligible for the award; however, VDC credits must be used by May 31, 2019.
To be considered, submit an application with the “Brad & Jennifer Bono Award” checkbox selected and a brief essay describing your demonstration of entrepreneurial leadership and social impact. The applications will be reviewed by Horn Entrepreneurship faculty member(s) who will then select the recipient.
Horn Entrepreneurship Award - $1000
The Horn Entrepreneurship Award is funded by annual gifts from the faculty who teach ENTR-designated courses. The award is granted to a student from any UD college or degree program who has taken at least one ENTR course, demonstrates exemplary entrepreneurial promise and promises to realize a great immediate benefit from the receipt of the $1000 award. The Horn Entrepreneurship Award is granted as a *VDC credit or for the pursuit of a specific educational opportunity related to creativity, entrepreneurship, innovation or leadership. Graduating seniors are eligible for the award; however, award funds must be used by May 31, 2019.
To be considered, submit an application with the “Horn Entrepreneurship Award” checkbox selected and a brief essay describing how you have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and how the immediate availability of funding would be a benefit in the pursuit of a specific business idea or educational opportunity. The applications will be reviewed by Horn Entrepreneurship faculty member(s) who will then select the recipient.
David Freschman Scholarship* - $2000
The David J. Freschman Scholarship was established in memory of David J. Freschman, University of Delaware alumnus, entrepreneur and venture capitalist.
This scholarship will be awarded in Fall 2019 to one or more, fulltime, undergraduate student(s) who will be enrolled during the 2019-2020 academic year and:
- Have demonstrated financial need;
- Have demonstrated the potential to become a successful entrepreneur;
- Possess some combination of the qualities and personal characteristics that David possessed, valued and encouraged: energy, enthusiasm, determination, sales acumen, financial ability, and good judgment;
- Are able to demonstrate some level of the above qualities through prior work experience, academic achievement or extracurricular activities.
To be considered, submit an application with the “David Freschman Scholarship” checkbox selected and a brief essay explaining how you possess the qualities, characteristics and experience referenced above. The applications will be reviewed by Horn Entrepreneurship faculty member(s) who will then select the recipient(s).
