Horn Certificates: Introductory Article

Have you ever wanted to learn about a different field of study without the pressure of adding a minor to your degree? Or found a minor you wished you could add, only to find out that it was in another college and not offered to you? Well then the certificates program may be perfect for you! The entrepreneurship certificates program, offered through Horn Entrepreneurship, is a small structured offering that allows UD undergraduates to complete nine to ten credits of approved courses that merge entrepreneurial ideas with science, art, business, agriculture, and more. Upon completion of the credits, students will earn a certificate for one of the seven certificates offered.

Horn has partnered with all seven colleges to curate a certificate unique to each college. Each certificate combines elements from both entrepreneurship studies and the studies of a specific college in order to offer a dynamic and unique curriculum. The purpose of the certificate program is to demonstrate how entrepreneurship and innovative thinking can be applied to anything University wide, and vice versa.

The best part about the certificates is that you can complete  certificates from any UD college, not just your major’s college; You can earn a certificate from any college of your choosing. For example, if you are a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, you can choose to work on a certificate from the College of Health Sciences or the Lerner College of Business and Economics. You can also work on more than one certificate, so if there are two certificates that interest you, Horn Entrepreneurship encourages you to take on both!

There are seven certificates currently offered. As aforementioned, each one combines elements of entrepreneurial studies with the studies of the specific college of the certificate you’ve chosen. The seven certificates available are:

Design and Creative Making - College of Arts and Sciences

Eco-Entrepreneurship - College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment

Entrepreneurial Leadership - Lerner College of Business and Economics

Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Health - College of Health Sciences

New Product Development - College of Agricultural and Natural Resources

Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship - College of Education and Human Development

Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship - College of Engineering

If you're a freshman or sophomore who is interested in broadening your horizons, but you’re scared of being overwhelmed by a minor, then the certificates program is a perfect way for you to expand your curriculum without too much additional stress. If you’re an upperclassmen who’s completed most of your requirements, but you don't have room for a minor, then the certificates program would be a great way for you to get your last few credits in while diversifying your education - not to mention it will also look great on a resume! If you are a student looking for a unique change of scenery, then the certificates program would be a great way to branch out and try something new. The certificates program is full of a wide range of courses that demonstrate the value of entrepreneurial thinking to many different fields of study, so there's something for everybody!

Please follow our weekly series that outlines each certificate in greater detail, such as the courses you can take to complete each certificate, and interviews with current certificates program students.
