From Mascots to Mindsets: Honoring Dave Raymond, Nasir Young, and the Spirit of Entrepreneurial Leadership

Written by Natalie Kessler | Nov 18, 2024 4:06:08 PM

Horn Entrepreneurship recently honored Dave Raymond with the 2024 Siegfried Award for Entrepreneurial Leadership and Nasir Young with the 2024 Student Award at a private dinner and award ceremony. The Siegfried Award for Entrepreneurial Leadership recognizes exceptional individuals who have not only shown themselves to be stewards of innovation through significant contributions to the leadership ecosystem, but have also made a significant positive impact on their communities and industries.

UD alumnus Dave Raymond was the first Phillie Phanatic and transformed the mascot industry. Dave founded the Raymond Entertainment Group nearly 20 years ago and has helped Fortune 500 companies, sports teams, and universities reimagine character brands. Beyond his work with mascots and branding, Dave's dedication to teaching how fun fuels genuine well-being is what truly sets him apart. Dave donated his $10,000 award to the Tubby Raymond Foundation.

Nasir is a 2021 Siegfried Fellow alumnus and a 2022 graduate of the University of Delaware where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology. He is currently a second-year graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice, where he is completing his master’s degree in Clinical Social Work. Nasir received a $2,500 award in recognition of his achievements and entrepreneurial vision.

Prior to the Award dinner and ceremony, selected UD students were invited to a workshop on entrepreneurial leadership featuring Dave Raymond, Nat Measley,  Rob Siegfried, and Johann Ducharme. The speakers discussed different aspects of character. Below are highlights from the workshop.

DAVE RAYMOND, HERO OF HAPPINESS
THE EVOLUTION OF HAPPINESS!®

Dave is a highly respected speaker, author, and brand consultant. He has been recognized on ABC, ESPN, and The New York Times, among many other nationally recognized stations.

Key Takeaways From This Workshop:

Be Kind
It is sometimes hard to talk about good things because our brain wants to protect us and puts negativity over positivity. It is important to be kind but remember, sometimes kindness can be selfish. This is because you can be kind conditionally kind to get something you want

Express Gratitude When Suffering
There is always something to be grateful for—many would love to be in your position right now.

Pillars to Live “The Good Life”
Family, Faith, Friends, and Work

Key Takeaways From This Workshop:

Intention vs Attention
Not intending to do something is not an excuse for your action.  You need to pay attention to things you want to be intentional about.  You should not have one without the other.

Being Curious Is How You Learn
Curiosity drives learning by encouraging you to ask questions, explore ideas, and deepen your understanding. This desire to know more fuels growth and innovation, making curiosity essential for lifelong learning.

Character Ethic Words
Some important words that Rob feels all entrepreneurs should apply to their character include Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Consistent, Empathy, Grateful, Appreciative, Passion , Patience, Discipline, Perseverance, Awareness, Accountability, and Mindset

JOHANN DUCHARME, PH.D.
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP and FACULTY DIRECTOR of the SIEGFRIED FELLOWS

Johann has held many respected positions in leadership theory. He is also a trained researcher working to generate new empirical theories.

Key Takeaways from This Workshop:

Lead Change
Steal like an artist (Austin Kleon). “Talent borrows; genius steals”, take what is given to you and repurpose them for your own use. Nothing is new, everything is recycled and repurposed off of past ideas.

Be Nimble
Overcome groupthink, value disagreement and the absurd.  Understand different viewpoints and perspectives of who is in the group.

Cultivate Character
Give the benefit of the doubt (Empathy) and be a virtuous decisions maker and risk taker (Authenticity).
