From building startups as a University of Delaware student to launching a Spanish language school in South America, Horn Entrepreneurship alumni Sam Goetz has followed an entrepreneurial journey focused on solving problems and stepping outside his comfort zone. After studying mechanical engineering at UD, Sam immersed himself in Horn Entrepreneurship, participating in nearly every program at Horn to gain the skills that shaped his career as an entrepreneur. Today, as the founder of Fluido Spanish School in Paraguay, he helps expatriates build community through language after turning a personal challenge into a business opportunity.

**What has your journey looked like and how has it led you to where you are today?**

“After graduating from the University of Delaware, I knew I wanted to take a different path rather than immediately stepping into a traditional career. I wanted to push myself outside of my comfort zone, experience something new, and see where those opportunities could take me. That eventually led me to Paraguay, where my experience living abroad played a major role in shaping where I am today. While living in Paraguay and learning Spanish myself, While living in Paraguay, I realized that others adjusting to life in a new country were facing the same challenges I was. Learning Spanish wasn’t just about learning a new language, it was also about being able to connect with people, feel comfortable in a new environment, and become part of the community. Through my own experience, I realized there was an opportunity to create something that could make that transition easier for others. That idea eventually became Fluido Spanish School. I wanted to create a place where people could improve their Spanish while also meeting others and building relationships.”

**How has your entrepreneurial path differed from that of many college graduates?**

“After graduating from UD, I decided to go all in on my startup instead of immediately entering the traditional workforce. At the time, I was completely focused on making my business successful and didn’t even consider getting a traditional job. Since then, my path has become even more unconventional. I eventually reached a point where my first business, Carmaster, was generating enough passive income for me to leave the United States and pursue something completely different. I moved to Latin America, first living in Peru and later moving to Paraguay. I never imagined that I would end up living abroad and starting an in-person business in another country. Starting Fluido Spanish School in Paraguay has been one of the biggest risks I’ve taken. It came from experiencing a real problem myself and deciding to do something about it. Instead of following a career path that I could have predicted after graduation, I’ve had to learn as I go, adapt to new environments and take opportunities as they come. My path hasn’t always been

easy or something I could have planned, but each experience has helped lead me to where I am today.”

**What inspired you to learn Spanish and move to South America?**

“When I finally decided to leave the United States and go on an adventure, I knew I didn’t want to simply travel. I wanted to do something meaningful with the experience and really become part of the culture wherever I went. For me, that meant learning the local language and making an effort to connect with the people and places around me. I also wanted to choose a part of the world where I could afford to live while exploring something new. I considered both East Asia and Latin America, but I already had some experience with Spanish and felt it was a language I could realistically become fluent in. That ultimately led me to Latin America and first to Peru, where I became a full-time Spanish student. After spending nearly five years constantly working on my business, learning Spanish gave me something completely new to focus on. I quickly became passionate about the language and enjoyed being a student again. What originally started as a way to make my travels more meaningful eventually became a major part of my life and ultimately helped lead me to Paraguay and the idea for Fluido Spanish School.”

**What gave you the confidence to take that leap on your own?**

“A big part of my confidence came from knowing that I wanted to do something different and experience life outside of the United States. After spending nearly five years constantly working on my startup, I finally felt ready to take a chance on something new. My first business, Carmaster, had also started generating passive income, which gave me the financial freedom to make that move and support myself while living abroad. Although I traveled on my own, my best friend and co-founder of Carmaster also played a role in encouraging me to explore Latin America, specifically Peru and later Paraguay. Once I made the decision, I committed to making the experience meaningful by learning Spanish and immersing myself in the culture. I didn’t know exactly where the experience would lead me, but I was willing to take the risk and figure things out along the way.”

**What has been a breakthrough moment in your career so far?**

“One of the biggest breakthrough moments for me was seeing students at Fluido Spanish School making plans to go out to lunch together after class. It may seem like a small moment, but for me, it showed that we had accomplished exactly what I set out to create. When I first moved to Paraguay, one of my biggest challenges was finding a place where I could learn Spanish while also meeting people and feeling at home. That experience became the reason I started Fluido. Our mission is to help people living abroad feel at home in Paraguay, and seeing our students build friendships that continued outside of the classroom showed me that we were making that happen. At the time, Fluido was still small, but seeing those connections made me realize that we were creating something meaningful. It wasn’t just about teaching Spanish; it was about creating a community where people could meet, form relationships and feel more connected to their new home.”

**How did your experiences at Horn Entrepreneurship and the University of Delaware shape your entrepreneurial mindset and the path you’ve taken?**

“Horn Entrepreneurship played a critical role in shaping the entrepreneur I am today. When I first got involved, I didn’t think entrepreneurship was something that could really be taught. While no one can build a business for you, Horn taught me a method and mindset that can help entrepreneurs have a better chance of succeeding. One of the biggest lessons I took away from Horn was the importance of solving a real problem. I learned to approach entrepreneurship by identifying a problem people are actually experiencing, understanding how valuable a solution could be and then building around that need. That idea has stayed with me throughout my entrepreneurial journey. I carried that mindset with me to Paraguay. When I struggled to find a Spanish school that gave me the experience and sense of community I was looking for, I recognized that I wasn’t the only person facing that problem. Instead of simply accepting it, I saw an opportunity to create a solution. That mindset ultimately helped lead me to start Fluido Spanish School and continues to influence how I approach entrepreneurship today.”

**What’s next for you and Fluido Spanish School? Are there any future goals or plans you’re excited to work toward?**

**“**My biggest goal is to make Fluido Spanish School the best Spanish school in the world. Right now, my focus is on continuing to grow here in Paraguay and improving every part of the experience we provide for our students. I see a unique opportunity in Paraguay as more people move here, and I want Fluido to continue growing alongside that community. Looking ahead, I’ll either continue expanding throughout Paraguay or bring Fluido Spanish School to other countries in South America. Bolivia, Argentina and Uruguay are a few places I could see us expanding to next. No matter where we go, the goal is to continue creating a place where people can learn Spanish, build connections and feel at home in a new country.”

In July 2026, Goetz sold CarMaster, his first business, to Soundplate, an existing B2B customer. The sale marks a new chapter in Goetz’s entrepreneurial journey, giving him the opportunity to focus full-time on growing Fluido Spanish School and its future.
