Entrepreneurship: A World of Possibilities

Horn Entrepreneurship defines entrepreneurship as pursuing the creation, delivery and capture of value from new ideas. Since 2012, Horn Entrepreneurship has helped students develop as entrepreneurs to better capture value from their ideas, whether that is through a business venture, a non-profit focusing on social impact or an artistic passion project on the side.

James Massaquoi, Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, Class of 2020, Entrepreneurial Studies minor and Delaware Innovation Fellow, weighed in with one takeaway. “Entrepreneurship isn’t just creating a business; entrepreneurship is creating value,” said Massaquoi. “To do that, you have to be doing something and that something has to mean something to you and others.”

For some, this idea has meant being able to better take advantage of their existing interests and passions. Entrepreneurship and Technology Innovation major Daphne Vantine, Class of 2018, was able to turn her hand painted driftwood creations into an entrepreneurial passion project with her Etsy shop, Daphne Rae Cape Cod. “I’ve always been drawn to being artistic,” said Vantine. “Working with the driftwood I find lets me create cool things while taking advantage of my entrepreneurial skill set.”

For others, entrepreneurship has meant transforming their free time to contribute constructively to social issues. “Real value is in solving other people’s problems for me,” said Jaeah Yoo, College of Engineering, Class of 2021, and Delaware Innovation Fellow. The young entrepreneur started the Registered Student Organization People for Puerto Rico in order to provide disaster relief to those in the U.S. territory. “Entrepreneurship has given me the skills to creatively solve problems and see opportunities for where I can contribute. The disaster and ensuing lack of aid for Puerto Rico inspired me to put my talents, and the talents of the UD community, to good use.”
